A few book reads....

So, I'm finally cracking open a few books in preparation for parenthood. I would say "we," but Hubs is not so much into the parenting books yet...much more into the graphic novels and comic books. (wink). Both of today's picks come from our church's bookstore and are highly recommended by our family & childrens' pastor.

The first is Sacred Parenting. We started reading this one at the beginning of our second pregnancy. I've just now found the courage to crack it open again.

The second is Parenting with Love and Logic by Foster Cline & Jim Fay. Which I would have not looked at twice had it not been for the person who recommended it.

I'll let you know how they progress and how I like them. Any recommendations from you folks?

To tell you the truth I have not even opened a book on parenting yet...we have used stuff from Love and Logic at work with our kiddos, and I have liked the things that we have used, although I haven't read the book

Gary Thomas has written on book called Sacred Marriage too. It is good, so Sacred Parenting should be a good read.

  3. We are in the midst of working our way through the Love & Logic book & like it so far. Another one that I'm reading right now is Creative Correction by Lisa Whelchel. I think I'm going to have to buy my own copy to refer back to (the one I'm reading is from the library) because I'm finding a lot of practical, hands on type stuff in it. A couple of other recommendations: Babywise by Dr. Gary Ezzo & anything written by Dr. Kevin Lehman. The Babywise book was invaluable in helping me get my babies on a routine & sleeping through the night at an early age. I never was super rigid about schedules, but I did find that they seemed to thrive on at least a loose schedule. Anyhow...that's my two cents. ;-) More than anything, though, it's about asking God every day for wisdom & then doing your very best. I still don't know what I'm doing, but I'm praying that God will take my many mistakes & failures & turn them into stepping stones for my kids. Blessings as you embark on this fun, but sometimes very scary journey called Parenthood!

  4. I read and reread Grace Based Parenting by Dr. Tim Kimmel. I was consistently surprised at how practical his insights were and how consistent his application was in consideration of the Biblical picture of God and how His character informs how He "parents" us and how that translates to how we should parent.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone and would lend you my copy except I would encourage you to take notes through it and end up with your own "expanded" version (all your comments, stars, and exclamation points).
